Service Manager High Wycombe

I’ve been working for Build On Belief at the Buckinghamshire, High Wycombe Hub for a while now and am really enjoying being part of the BoB family as well as meeting and getting to know our service users.

My previous career was largely spent selling catering equipment to the Hospitality Industry, which enabled me to develop relationships with many different types of caterers and some high-profile clients.

However, the stress of sales in that environment along with some major personal issues, including divorce, fatherhood, and financial problems, meant that an addiction to alcohol became my coping mechanism. This eventually led to a very isolated and lonely existence living in a squalid flat with no job and no prospects.

Changed finally happened when I sought help via a twelve-step recovery program, namely AA, and reconnected with the human race and with others who had similar life experiences. I have now been sober for over six and a half years.

During this time, I’ve come to learn a great deal more about substance abuse and the reasons behind why people turn to damaging ways of coping with life….as I had.

Sobriety has enabled me to retrain and change careers and I’m now a qualified Self-Employed Massage Therapist as well as working for BoB at weekends.

I also do a lot of service in AA and run regular meetings in HMP Aylesbury which is so rewarding and allows me the opportunity to connect with other addicts and alcoholics who are often doing time as a consequence of their substance addiction.  

I’ve also found meditation, yoga and other wellness sessions to be very helpful and therapeutic and regularly meet with others to practice these.

Helping to run the service at BoB enables me to engage with others on an equal footing and to create a non-judgmental and safe environment for our service users to enjoy.

It’s very rewarding to see vulnerable people begin to change and turn their lives around. I hope that their positive interactions with us will instill in them some belief that life can and does get better with the right support and a willingness to take action. I’m so glad to be part of that!
